In prehistoric times, millions of bison roamed North America -- from the forests of Alaska and the grasslands of Mexico to Nevadas Great Basin and the eastern Appalachian Mountains. While bison have made a comeback since their population was devastated over 100 years ago, the species is still heavily dependent on conservation action for survival. Originally, bison were found primarily in the grasslands and prairie of North America. The true distribution of this species is difficult to pinpoint, mainly because the vast majority range on private and government-owned land. Now reduced to a fraction of their current range and population, bison survive mainly in conservation herds. They are bred for consumption and meat production, not docile temperament. Thus, keeping them in a secure, appropriately enclosed pasture is essential. They are grazers and will consume large amounts of grass. In addition, starting after the Civil War, bison were exterminated to make way for farmland as people settled the Great Plains. For most of the year herds are divided by sex, with females and calves in one herd and males in another herd.

In the past these creatures have also inhabited semi-wooded areas, but they are not frequently found in wooded areas currently. Grazing takes place during several periods each day and is conducted in loose groups. Ditch the disposables and make the switch to sustainable products.

August and September are the months when mating occurs for the American Bison. They like low growing grasses and sedges. The dominant bulls (male bison) choose a female and defend her against other males through fighting.

She will nurse the calf for at least 7 months, but sometimes as long as 18 months. Male bison display their fitness by charging and butting heads with other bulls.

They are considered semi-domesticated because their domestication has not undergone as long of a process as domestic cattle.
