While bison have made a comeback since their population was devastated over 100 years ago, the species is still heavily dependent on conservation action for survival. Originally, bison were found primarily in the grasslands and prairie of North America. The true distribution of this species is difficult to pinpoint, mainly because the vast majority range on private and government-owned land. Now reduced to a fraction of their current range and population, bison survive mainly in conservation herds. They are bred for consumption and meat production, not docile temperament. In addition, starting after the Civil War, bison were exterminated to make way for farmland as people settled the Great Plains. For most of the year herds are divided by sex, with females and calves in one herd and males in another herd.
