Thought the historical context of the genesis of Argentinian national identity was well-woven into a tale of feral playmakers, dysfunctional organisations around football (at fan and ownership level), and some of the most compelling characters in the history of the game (Maradonna, Bielsa, Tevez). It's filled with hope and grace. Wilson writes as well or better than anyone about how technical choices by soccer players turn into narrative, myth, and ideology. Not dry or too dense, but packs as much of a punch as any theory I've encountered on the prison industrial complex. There is a lot of football narrative and due to the author switching between themes and key characters (Messi, Maradona, Menotti, Riquelme etc), one occasionally loses their sense of time and must go back a number of pages to determine what year it is.

The explanation of the role of culture and politics gives context and greater understanding. But there were moments that were so poignant and so thought provoking, and because the whole book overall is so important, I went with 5. Some interesting historical snippets.

Can't wait to read her other work! It was nice to Randy's story through childhood and onto Ozzy. It's not high literature, but it brought me into their world briefly, and if you're a Rhoads fan, then it'll do just fine.

Walidah Imarisha is an incredible storyteller and her interweaving of these stories is magnificent. This is an excellent book, which offers a potted social and political history of Argentina as well as of its football. Each manages to be deeply personal while offering a world of insight as to how the stories of these three individuals came to be so interconnected and how their stories tell a larger story of the system of institutionalized violence and power abuse plays out in the USA.

I have always been interested in Argentine football and this book really nails it.
