boomiverse review

Big Boi is here to stay, and he keeps you grooving.

This album shows just why Big Boi should be considered one of the greatest of all time by any serious rap fan. I want him to approach a song in a way that I wouldn’t expect. And while new beginnings aren't without their flaws, Big Boi's lyrical prowess and effortless delivery provide the thread that link the old Big Boi universe to this, the Boomiverse. Big has been one of rap’s OG uncles for a while now but there seems to be a lot of verses kicking some words of wisdom. “One of the last niggas snapping” and a bar about how only 3000 can match him. Snoop is FLOATING.

Complete your Big Boi collection. In usual 1-Listen fashion, the rules are the same: no skipping, no fast-forwarding, no rewinding and no stopping. Yo! He's actually pretty nice — if I do say so myself. He is invested in his signature style. On “Da Next Day,” he calls himself “rap’s Underground Railroad” and leaves a dollar tip for a Waffle House waitress in the same breath. Freakonomics is lyrically lazy (“Every girl I see got a PhD in Freakonomics”). Critic Reviews Good offering from Spitta, his verse easily could’ve been the beginning of a 16. Thankfully, Big Boi — best known as one-half of iconic hip-hop duo Outkast — isn’t setting out for absolute greatness with his newest release, his third solo studio album BOOMIVERSE. The song has none of the lacquered, assembly-line sheen of his usual work, providing further evidence that Big Boi at his best is a top-shelf collaborator, someone who instinctively knows how to draw vital energies out of unlike minds.

So far so good, the bass is heavy. The album is far from the work of a legend resting on his laurels; instead, its inventive and genuinely fun sound makes a compelling case for why, 20 years after his debut, we should still be paying attention to Big Boi. He’s starting the album off and he’s living up to his moniker. With a plethora of guest spots adding some serious variety to the already sonically multifarious album, hearing Big Boi go back and forth with the likes of Kurupt, Snoop Dogg, Eric Bellinger, and even Adam Levine of Maroon 5, makes it all the more fun. Okay, this is blow out your speakers music. In the running for my favorite beat on the album. So Southern. This beat has more swing than an elementary school playground. So happy to see Spitta on the album.

Big singing. After taking a walk on the alternative side, it appears that Big Boi is headed back home for his third studio album. He’s definitely not coasting, but his solo career is still a goodwill project. Keys and percussion are off-kilter.

Following 2015’s collaboration album with Phantogram comes a new solo record that throws bold flavours into the pot but ends up absent of subtlety and distinction.

Generally favorable reviews- based on 24 Ratings, A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote. Shedding a tear for old Cash Money. This dude has been in the game since 1994 and is still releasing high quality albums with incredible production, great features, and of course impeccable verses from Big himself. Big Boi - Boomiverse Review For veteran music listeners who've experienced the rise and fall of countless musicians, the nearly inevitable demise of someone once adored is a palpable fear that must be faced. The slick wordsmith has long proven he could stand alone as a solo artist. [Sep 2017, p.62].

Don’t know about that Cosby line Big, you got explaining to do. Vintage Big, I like it. The album is far from the work of a legend resting on his laurels; instead, its inventive and genuinely fun sound makes a compelling case for why, 20 years after his debut, we should still be paying attention to Big Boi.

My bad, forgot Killer Mike was right there when it dropped. This is an album that makes Helen Keller jokes and suggests Bill Cosby might, in fact, be innocent — and that’s just mentioning the heavier stuff. But if you put this one in the background at your latest house party, you likely won’t get any objections from anyone just trying to cut the carpet with their swinging feet. Friend him on Facebook. Not quite sold enough to return but I may.

Silly but also brilliant. He’s comfortable. If you can find your way to a microphone, our ears will listen. This instrumental is so gospel with the organ chords. LIVE FOREVER FOR HIS ETERNAL POEMS. It sets your album with a loose, goofy tone. WOOOO SCAR SANGIN'.

The album doesn’t sound modern, this isn’t the Atlanta rap album for the kids who don’t know that Zay Hilfigerrr and Zayion McCall's biggest song stole the beat from “Knuck If You Buck.” But it doesn’t sound old, either. 80. This is it. This hook feels a bit dated. Released 16 June 2017 on Epic (catalog no.

Otherwise, he's in elite statesman form. Yeah, Snoop got some ad libs. Like a night out at the club, it’s fun, fast-moving, heart-pounding, crowded and finished far too soon. On past projects he has been comfortable sticking to a script he’s outlined for himself but here, he operates without rules. Love the T-Rex line just because Gucci has a car worthy of a dinosaur title. At its worst, however, it’s somewhat inconsequential and even fairly corny at times. For a guy whose catalog includes “Rosa Parks” and “Bombs Over Baghdad,” that is not faint praise. Nice, funky bassline. Straight drunk out my mind thumper. This is smooth. Just nasty. A white Hennessy nod, that’s how you know Big’s an OG. Hearing some DJ scratches. Personal highlights for me are Kill Jill, which has one of the most original beats I've ever heard, All Night, which is incredibly catchy, Freakanomics, which again has a really infectious beat, and the closer, Follow Deez, which is a dream come true for me as a huge fan of Curren$y. I’m loving all the OGs man.

There’s this electronic breakdown at the end that sounds like what Star Wars characters would breakdance to. Love the melody Sleepy is utilizing. It’s definitely from their lineage. © 2020 CBS Interactive Inc. All rights reserved. Boomiverse’s self-conscious stylistic plurality is the new old-school. KNOCKING. This dude has been in the game since 1994 and is still releasing high quality albums with incredible production, great features, and of course impeccable verses from Big himself. might be doing. Someone delivered a bridge and I’m unsure, he just came in the song like Bruh-man from the fifth flo. This is good, a Southern thumper with a classical jazz influence. Is that Scar? All that appears to matter to Big Boi on Boomiverse is making good music that players can still bump in their Cadillacs.

Rap voices matter. YO! But he still knows how to make a hell of a beat.

His legacy is solidified. “Overthinking is a drug.” Second verse is also good. This is uplifting. D.R.A.M. based on Nice drum kick here.

Big Boi returns with a collection of shiny bangers unbothered with modern trends. It's a fun affair but still doesn't reflect the Outkast member's true greatness. Probably silly to criticize a pimp for always arriving to a party with a different girl. Podcast Episode 13: 2018 Grammy Predictions, Album Review: Calvin Harris – “Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1”, ‘The Code for Love and Heartbreak’ Interview: Author Jillian Cantor on Writing Retellings, Interview: Author Chloe Gong on writing about identity and colonialism in ‘These Violent Delights’, Interview with Samantha Mabry, Author of ‘Tigers, Not Daughters’.

I will say Big’s delivery refuses to do what the kids are doing.

Boomiverse probably won’t alter his trajectory, but there are several songs here that I would not be the least bit irritated he played at a festival. SHEESH.

Some swinging drums and snapping snares. The 25 Best Console Launch Games (Since 2000), Music title data, credits, and images provided by, Movie title data, credits, and poster art provided by.

I feel like XXXTaco getting punched on stage. Is it strange that I’m interested in what Young Thug would sound like on this? Sounds like a hook. H-Town!

In the same vein of 'Yeezus,' 'Big Fish Theory' finds Vince challenging the very idea of what a rapper can create. From buying a Lexus to buying land. I forgot how unique Big’s sound is. The 80s funk jam Mic Jack folds Maroon 5’s Adam Levine into the mix, conjuring images of Cameo’s red codpiece and side-stepping on a sticky club floor. He sounds smoother than dead crocodile suede on a pimp's feet. Great flow on this one but I don’t know if he said anything too memorable.
