chris mannix red rock

And I was called out by this in another comment, but I would agreeish with you. Clearly a man that understands the rules of society and is happy to play by them. Low ball estimate of 2 girls and 4 boys. He's my favorite character in the movie too. All whilst claiming to be a lawman. I wasn't sure how to bring that up in an update edit. Your source for columns, features, videos, podcasts and breaking news from Sports Illustrated Senior Writer Chris Mannix This will come in later with the family bit. When Mannix meets John Ruth and Co. and Ruth asks for his badge, Chris tells them that if they're bounty hunters, it's him they're taking their dead bounties to. happens upon Chris Mannix, a Southern renegade and son of the leader of the “Mannix's Marauders”, a group that terrorized South Carolina after the Civil War.

Chris Mannix (AKA The Sheriff) was a main character and the secondary protagonist of The Hateful Eight. . It takes him less than 15 minutes after learning of Marquis' letter to realize it was a fake, and he didn't even have to read it. Why write him that way if he himself didn't believe that he was going to be Sheriff of Red Rock. You actually call out a point I've criticised in my own mind upon rereading. Seems like a lot of trouble for nothing.

Then if we take what he says about being Sheriff to be true, he also never tells a lie, makes a deception, or attempts to hurt/kill anyone preemptively (at least any one that hadn't already tried to kill him ).

So if his family was planning to get rid of him and his overly smart and mouthy ways, they had set up several opportunities to have it done. In fact, it's one of the things Chris most admired about his father. What it could mean though, is that he was given a lame horse without his knowledge. A man who joined his father and family to ransack towns in order to inspire fear for the Confederacy, dying by the side of the type of person he hated most. I've got to recheck my own work. I honestly believe Tarantino meant it to be applicable either way, he's good at leaving unapparent connections and not spoonfeeding meanings. Meaning either that it wasn't his horse, it was but he didn't care, or that no one asked him so that's something about him we'll never know.

All it takes is finding someone else also willing to kill the Sheriff.

It's probably one of those situations like in the stagecoach where he can run his mouth a bit too much, or like he does with Ruth and Warren, use legal leverage to gain an upper hand.

But, he figured out that all of what Daisy Domergue said was bullshit the same way he figured out Warren's letter was shit: character context clues. He even realizes his tongue is getting him into stupid trouble on the stagecoach so he shuts down the conversation and apologizes for his getting riled up. Third thing is the blizzard. It's my way of paying homage. There's another great point you draw too: Actually, the only character I would classify as "pure of heart" is O.B. Both values of honest men. If he wasn't the sheriff, what's wrong with shooting who you know to be the bad guy if there aren't legal repercussions? is such a bold choice for a protagonist. I've heard the "8" as the bounties too but I added that last addendum as way of tying it up with the characters who speak in the movie. Second way is by horse.

And a blizzard that large would have signs that would be spottable even back then. I'd love for Tarantino to read theories like this one on his films and respond to them in the way Jordan Peele did for Get Out. Joe Gage he more or less guessed/used instinct. This is solid. And he never asked.

We learn during bits of dialogue throughout the movie that Erskine Mannix led a team of Confederate rebels known as Erskine's Marauders during and after the Civil War. But I wouldn't classify Chris as "pure of heart". Chris Mannix was an awesome and lovable character.

And if you look at his actions solely inside of the movie, one could say he's a "good" person. Tl;dr: Due to his intelligence, mouth, and aspirations, Chris Mannix was appointed Sheriff of Red Rock via a sham election organized by his siblings so he could be killed anonymously from a distance. Almost a runt in the litter type. Sheriff Chris Mannix : [grinning] Well, the man in Red Rock's supposed to pay you is me, the new sheriff!

I like to think I made the idea in this theory ambiguous enough that it works inside of Tarantino's vague framework without being too concrete. So we can assume that he meant what he said. You can tell he looked up to his daddy. Chris doesn't shoot him even with the crazy going on around him. And he says youngest boy so we can infer that Erskine had daughters.

I don't know if this theory convinced me it's true, but definitely interesting to think about and gives a good possible back story to my favorite character of the film. Thank you for reading my theory and hitting me back.

I'm taking it as headcanon and keeping it in mind next time I watch (and boy, do I love watching it).

Good natured, hated, but bloody good at playing the game.). This is the role that made me fall in love with Goggins and I'll pretty much watch anything he's in. I've literally put the movie on because of what you said. Sounds like a plan that we're not seeing all the pieces of. And if he wasn't, what's the lie for? Thanks for liking my little background story too! Interesting. I love this theory and your writing style. , New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, More posts from the FanTheories community. It makes it so that whether or not Chris was Sheriff is a lost concept, seeing that'd he be dead when he got there anyway.

So this leaves a power vacuum. Thanks. This is part of the reason I love this theory. First, they pay a man to kill the Sheriff in Red Rock (I imagine as Marauders they would have plenty of cash. That way when Chris comes to town, he suffers the same fate as the Sheriff before him. Not just in greetings but in negotiation stances and regular interactions. If only Tarantino showed up in social media to read and give his thoughts on this.

This is what makes me think about this the most though. and Mannix are the two odd "good" guys out, either by integrity or by not trying to actively hurt anyone in the story.

He's a blatant, hardcore racist who took joy in hunting/ransacking/murderous what-have-yous. Several characters also bring up that Erskine died recently. But enough of them to dislike the little one. My goal was to keep it as ambiguous headcanon, in spirit to what Tarantino was originally trying to do. As complex and storied as all of us watching him.

Reading what I wrote again, I can tell I got swept up in characterizing Chris as a sort of anti-hero. It'd be the bees knees if Tarantino called this theory out. Great points and analysis of this awesome film that make it all the more awesome. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Final weird thing to think about. Sheriff Chris Mannix : [as Warren approaches General Smithers] Warren, goddamn it, you leave that old man alone. It's a long distance from Wyoming to Red Rock.

So of course Erskine's kids would hop on this hate train. Chris clearly thought he was going to be the new Sheriff.

There are even several times where he refers to himself as a Sheriff believing that he will live to carry out his threats.

That makes me love the character even more.

I think O.B.

and that's because we don't know anything about him!

Allways welcome! But he's a man who values dignity and true leadership.

The greyest of grey characters.

In reading and researching for this theory I came across an interesting thing about Walton Goggin's portrayal of Chris Mannix. Also, I'm sorry/think it's really cool I fooled your brain into thinking that Chris Mannix was an alright guy. If he's the youngest of the family then one could infer that he's had the hard life. And when John Ruth refuses to let him board without manacles, Mannix tells O.B. In fact, one of the first things that Chris does is interact with the person he believes to be Red Rock's new hangman.

And finally, near his deathbed, with no one to care, he declares his "first and final act, as the Sheriff of Red Rock" is to have Domergure hanged. He's a player that needed to be shut up. are the only "pure of heart" ones. A similar thing happens when they reach the Haberdashery. I think that's what really cemented to me that he wasn't lying. Thanks for calling me out on that.

To that I would add that it does. So, he's great at spotting lies. I'd wager there came a time after/before Erskine died where Chris wanted more power in the family.

While it’s never revealed to be a lie, it’s never confirmed to be true, either.

Good theory about Mannix by the way, gonna rewatch it with this in mind soon.

Going so far as to ask if he can see the hanging papers for the man who shot the Sheriff that Chris is replacing. I always thought he was telling the truth. It can be implied that the entire Mannix family was apart of this, since it's said their numbers reached around 400. A very cunning commitment to a lie if I've ever seen one. He started to exert influence and amass bits of power, becoming more politically dangerous. The theory works without changing anything. Hats off to Tarantino and Goggins for bringing such a complex character to life. that he will be legally obliged to inform the Marshal at Red Rock that Ruth left the new Sheriff to freeze without assisting him. This needed to get explored and it excites me to see another person who gets it. Thank you so very much for your enthusiasm for my little headcanon. Cause he never lies throughout the whole movie.

This is closer to conjecture but Chris doesn't seem to have the attachment to his horse that Marquis did.

Walton Goggins is awesomely lovable! I wanted to hate him, but I just couldn't.

His honesty can even be seen in his dissemination of other people's lies.

Thanks for reading and enjoying the theory too. To me, that's one of the charms of the movie....everyone's kinda f'd up. Walton Goggins, the actor who plays Chris Mannix, is the only one who knows whether or not Mannix is the sheriff, but he’s not telling. Yet still an honest man nonetheless.

There's a line by John Ruth where he says that Chris is Erskine Mannix's youngest boy. Cause you're right. Now let's look at Chris. Is that a bluff?’ And his reply was, ‘I need you to figure out the answer and never tell me what it is.’ That was all I needed to know.

And for Walton and Quentin to say, "No, you decide."

Have my upvote, please I insist. He even cordially chats up with Oswaldo, reasoning they'll be working together soon. I Always thought of the "hateful 8" as the people with bounties on their heads; aka the Dormague gang [Jodie, Daisy, Senior Bob, Joe Gage, Oswoldo] + the three dead bounties Marquis already had.

Now here's where you can imply a few things. When Marquis draws his weapon on Sanford E. Smithers, and Oswaldo Mobray's reminds him that he'll hang in Red Rock if he does. Sure seems like the perfect opportunity to confess all of one's lies and yet Chris stays quiet. That'd be the dream! and bribe public officials to rig the election so Chris becomes Sheriff. I love the ambiguous nature of Walton Goggin's character Chris Mannix in The Hateful Eight.

Walton Goggins has really nailed some awesome roles in the last few years! Chris says as much when talking about fighting under his father's command.

My brain did it to me too! So he was sent into a white hell on a lame horse heading to an eventual bullet. I realized it when I bought the Reservoir Dogs DVD and saw that Tarantino had written biographies for each of the characters that we were never privy to. Rewatching right now and when the shooting finally starts, even with a bullet just lodged in him, Chris doesn't shoot Joe Gage when Joe says he's unarmed and calls him Sheriff. Meaning that if this is a regular Carolinan family from the 1800's, they would have as many kids as possible. Looks like you're using new Reddit on an old browser. I'd love to hear him examine it in the same way.
