Time Out says 'Golly, the misery that walks around in this pretty, quiet night!' Photography is excellent, really good. Some very serious contributors to film art created this almost forgotten whodunit. The plot is somewhat convoluted (although not as hard to follow as some make out) and the ending is a little 'feel good' for a noir but Odets' dialog is what will bring you into it - or push you out. THE Pakistan Democratic Movement jalsa in Gujranwala on Friday has set the stage for a charged few weeks ahead. It's hilarious how committed these three people are to solving this crime despite the fact that there's absolutely nothing attaching the sailor to it, and how easy a time they have following up on clues in as huge a city as NY despite the fact that the clues are things like "he was wearing a tuxedo" and "she had blonde hair." Their deadline is at dawn. Hardly anyone is there: just cab drivers, cabs speeding by, an occasional drunk man shouting something, and lots of police officers. Close to a 4* but there's a few moments that fall flat here and there and it does show its stage roots (this was director Harold Clurman's only cinematic departure from his usual theatrical work). This was my first and so far only exposure to this acclaimed actress, and I look forward to many more. What a blast this movie is!

Directed by William Cameron Menzies, Harold Clurman. In 1943 as "The Clock on the Paramount" it was re-submitted and published under the psuedonym of William Irish. From the eponymous mammoth reference guide of genre cinema, animated fare, science…, Planning to get back to into Film Noir again, one of my favourite genres. | In the current scenario, the government has locked down all major shopping malls as preventive measures.

I would have loved to have seen Hayward, as a female, play one of those 1940's private eyes, or try her hand at the Stanwyck role in "Double Indemnity". Deadline at Dawn was adapted from a novel by Cornell Woolrich and the screenplay was written by Clifford Odets. Aside from Woolrich, the movie also bought in Clifford Odet's who wrote the screenplay and I, also, love the quirky and philosopical dialogue the characters utter. ", Unlike similar noirs about the guilt of being saddled with a big pile of cash or about the greed of wanting to keep it, this one's just about having the money and trying to do the right thing with it (return it to is owner; a little guy too benevolent and altruistic to keep what’s not rightfully his, unlike the covetous capitalists who are more than happy to exploit you for your labor), and about how sometimes the folks who help you out are…. Terrific performances by many actors make this 1946 noir a joy to watch. It's NYC, but it's NYC at 4:00 a.m. and it has this really empty feeling, amplified by the fact that it's so clearly shot on a Hollywood soundstage, where everything can be perfectly still and the lights are so controlled. Despite her pleas of innocence, an honest cop arrests his own girlfriend for her alleged part in a jewel robbery and he keeps hounding her after her release from prison, even though he still loves her. He teams up with a dance hall hostess (Susan Hayward) and, before the evening's out, a cab driver (Paul Lukas) and sets out into the New York midnight to solve the crime. The screenplay doesn't make a lick of sense, and my wife and I found ourselves actually laughing at the preposterous developments and turns in the story.

In 1940s murder mysteries, it's taken for granted that American society is massively corrupt and venal to the core. Though enjoyable by virtue of its distorted mise-en-scène, affection for NYC characters and its misplaced chatter, this is not art but run-of-the-mill film noir.
