pray for paris review

“I need 100 right now.” I’d also love $100 right now. “LE Djoliba” wasn’t necessary.

Pray for Paris is a soulful yet, grimy masterpiece. “Allah sent me here to be a king” is right.

And there goes Conway! Westside Gunn's unique brand of artistry arrives in full splendor on the opulent and brutally violent "Pray For Paris."

Westside Gunn’s world is still one of excitement and redemption. While he isn’t the most dynamic rapper in the game, his main superpower is his ability to sound like … Pray For Paris offers some of the best soulful street boom-bap you’ll ever hear, the beats fit WSG’s style perfectly. In Gunn’s world, wrestling acts like The Steiner Brothers and Randy Savage describe tag-team street efforts and memories of uzi shells and street corners long past.
Interesting. I love this beat. Marciano has worked with the Griselda for years now. Unfortunately, some of the album’s surest bets don’t pan out. © 2020 The DJ Booth LLC.

Word to Daringer, man.

Pitchfork is the most trusted voice in music. Nice wind chimes to counteract these damp drums. There was a time when Westside Gunn and his Griselda cohorts Conway and Benny the Butcher were just some Buffalo rappers warming themselves on the flame sparked by Roc Marciano’s Marcberg. In songs like "George Bondo" and "French Toast", you hear the dreamy, fluttering keys in the production countered with Westside spitting about razors, MAC-11s, and selling dope. These are the raps I’d expect of a man who faced coronavirus and lived to tell the tale.
In the age of streaming and playlists, Pray For Paris further solidifies Westside Gunn as an album artist.

I wish Pray For Paris ended with “Party with Pop Smoke” instead. “When you ain’t leave the house unless your gat match your sneakers.” Black Air Force 1 activity. Boldy’s language is beautiful. We’re back in the mud with Daringer, Machine, and The Butcher. To Westside Gunn’s credit, the more overblown his personality becomes, the better his raps get. Smoking gun left at the scene. On “George Bondo,” all three fight for the moment: Westside Gunn prays on a Persian rug, Conway hits the Roc Nation brunch and intimately mingles with an R&B singer, and Benny the Butcher orders a hit at the Venetian.

Pray For Paris, his latest self-released project, out today, is shaping up to be his most ambitious work yet. The release included cameos from label-mates Conway the Machine and Benny the Butcher, and also special appearances from Freddie Gibbs, Wale, Joey Badass, and Tyler the Creator. This juxtaposition between lyrical content and instrumental tone is one Pray for Paris' strongest selling points.

“Rod Wave is like if the song ‘Soul Survivor’ by Akon and Young Jeezy came to life and joined a choir.”. On his verse, he seams lines of street violence and submachine guns, with shopping sprees with some of the most well-renowned high-fashion houses present at Fashion Week.

Benny came in swinging. “My SBs is old, your SBs is wack.” Always here for sneaker shit talk. DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOT DOOOOOOO.

He titled it Pray for Paris because thanks to Virgil actually, he was invited to Paris Fashion Week and it was his first time out of the country. Well, on Pray For Paris, Tyler came true to that fact and produced track 12, "Party wit Pop Smoke."

The beat to “Euro Step” sounds refined enough to play during a sit-down dinner in a castle while he describes some snapshots from his life: purchasing a Goyard leash for his Saint Bernard, drinking wine in France with a specialist, and whipping coke with an Avian watch on his wrist. It matches the ghostly aura of the beat nicely.

Despite the harsh grayscale atmosphere of their production, the bars had the colorful touch of mid-’00s Atlanta trap, and their swagger felt timeless. A piece of art just sold for $400 million. Virgil’s message with the tap dancer didn’t connect, but the cosign gave Griselda an unlikely path into fashion and art spaces typically not welcoming to gritty artists like them. Paris features some of his biggest gets yet: Tyler, The Creator has both a feature (“327”) and a production credit (“Party wit Pop Smoke”) while Wale makes his Griselda Records debut on “French Toast.” Names like theirs give Paris a lofty air even by Griselda standards. Alchemist has worked closely with the Griselda artists in the past. Joey Bada$$, I haven’t heard that name in a while. “Living comfortably off of gut instinct.” Gunn came right in to cap this song off nicely. Talk your shit, queen! Yes, the 22-year old kid from New Jersey who got his social media fame kick-started off Vine. Gunn sounds great without drums. Strong start. Alchemist with a bopper. These rare lapses in Gunn’s sharp sequential judgment keep Pray For Paris from ascending to Supreme Blientele levels, but they aren’t dealbreakers. Conway the Machine & Benny the Butcher)”.

Some pretty keys.
