"Walled In" definitely looked like a horror movie with massive potential and several aspects about the synopsis immediately appealed to me, like the guaranteed horrific theme of claustrophobic death, isolated buildings with a macabre past, lunatic architects and a slowly unfolding serial killer plot. Any film that begins with a small girl, trapped in a wall cavity, being smothered by cement, immediately gets my attention, but sadly nothing that follows is quite as arresting as this cool pre-credits sequence. "Walled in" starts off really great. So overall its not worthy to that extent which was expected after the start. Sam meets a mother and son, Mary(Deborah Kara Unger)and Jimmy(Cameron Bright)whose patriarch was one of Malestrazza's victims.
Though ending is anticlimactic and the story doesn't follow through after the amazing build-up. Certain tenants remain in the building while most fled after the corpses of occupants were pulled from their manufactured "sarcofaguses" created by Malestrazza located in his "sleeping quarters"(he had no furniture, just books). This film had a stupid plot, Mischa Barton is a fool who can't act. Unfortunately the authors forgot that the beauty is in the simplicity. Malestrazza(Pascal Greggory)is an architectural genius, with something like 27 buildings to his credit, inspired by the Egyptians and their innovative Pyramids..but, he's also a psychopath who walled in many of his tenants and when he was caught, it resulted in his mysterious death. The performances are very much below par and the overall conclusion regarding the film is, simply put, embarrassing. Ah I just hated this film. Hook Word Lists. The whole film is a figment of Sam's imagination, the tenants of the Malestrazza building all the facets of Sam's fractured mind. So I've found myself rating many films 4 - 6, and too many times unimpressed.
Sam does take a liking to Jimmy(why is anyone's guess, most viewers, I imagine, will be beckoning for Sam to stay away from this kid)and he shows her Malestrazza's "place of rest", including the holes in the wall where the victims were chiseled out. The opening scene is kind of creepy with a little girl waking up in a cell and suffocating in cement. I love horror movies, especially ones that rely more on imagination and atmosphere, this one does to an extent but then focuses on the human element and becomes more of a thriller, in this I felt a little cheated. The ending What could go wrong? I thought that the ending could have been a bit better but is was a good film. Walled In has a great location at its disposal with this weird block of flats type thing in the middle of nowhere. Twelve years ago, one worker walled people in, including Mary's beloved husband, entombing the victims in cement. The first few minutes were good and the opening especially but soon I found the plot swinging around some bad direction.
