The narrator for Audible’s The Sandman is Gaiman himself, describing his creations so listeners can imagine their own panels – it means the series works as … I’m really looking forward to more encounters between the Endless, the siblings, because they all have such presence now. In The Sandman, stories birth gods, shape worlds, and confer immortality in ways both supernatural and perfectly mundane, even historically accurate. The Audible adaptation is faithful and fascinating, but it should have lost something in the translation. It’s a good thing because the stories are, of course, wonderful. Comics are tricky to adapt because so much of the experience is tied with the visuals of the comic, so there is always a temptation to try to capture as much of the visuals as possible. If the series has a secondary theme, it is that immortal things — whether they are stories, gods, superheroes, lucky humans, or even the so-called Endless themselves — cannot resist change.
