A major breakthrough occurred after the 1986 season when the top two teams in the country, Miami and Penn State, agreed to play for the de facto national championship in the Fiesta Bowl. Boise State,down 35-28 with 1:02 left, pulled off the "hook and lateral" play to tie the game and send it into overtime.
