I think that’s important.

But if you put social activities ahead of your academics or your basketball, you’re not going to have any of them at all before very long. They came to draw their uniforms and they hadn’t taken care of themselves. John Wooden: Oh, of course you have to keep your emotions under control. We lost it twice and won it once. You’ll be challenged to redefine your own meaning of success, and discover timeless principles for achieving true and lasting happiness. I enjoy reading and I like pretty much all kinds. Do the best you can do. Individually, don’t compare, just try to make the most of what you have under the conditions that exist for you and try to improve those conditions. I often use verse to make a point. I would give up some size to get more quickness. There is a certain amount of luck that comes in life itself, in sports and in all professions.

I’m there with my managers because I want to anticipate any problems.

Wooden, with Steve Jamison, wrote two books on lessons from his experience as a coach: Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and off the Court (1997) and Wooden on Leadership (2005). That’s why I went there. I’m a fatalist to some degree. I had a ticket on that plane and had to cancel it and go the next day. Every game you lose is disappointing, but nothing like losing a conference game that would keep you out of getting into the tournament. He didn’t get to play very much, but he was a member of our team and dressed for every game, was with us for every game. John Wooden: I was just teaching basketball rather than English. One was a verse that said: No written word, no spoken plea, Life was difficult for the Woodens. I never change them. Then, my dad’s words: “Never trying to better than someone else, learn from others, and never cease trying to be the best you could be.” And, always being interested in verse that makes a point, about that time I ran across a little simple one that said:

At God’s footstool, to confess,
A poor soul knelt and bowed his head. "The Wizard of Westwood" ended his 29-year college head coaching career with a 664-162 record and an amazing .804 winning percentage, as well a record 10 national championships. In ’63, I decided to stick with something that had been very successful for me at Indiana State and high school.

People don’t believe me when I tell them about that here in California. We all have opportunities every day to live up to Coach Wooden’s idea that we can do more good by being good than any other way. That carried over in all my teaching. Also, find more articles and videos about Coach Wooden regularly here on TheWoodenEffect.com. You’ve often said that you didn’t want your teams to have peaks or valleys, that you didn’t believe in getting them emotionally charged even for big games. John Wooden: It’s my own conscience that would guide me on things. If you get yourself too engrossed in things over which you have no control, it’s going to adversely effect the things over which you have control. In high school I taught Hamlet and Macbeth and I only had two weeks.

Wooden earned three straight All-America selections as a guard at Purdue University and was named team captain as a junior. They couldn’t understand. He was named the NCAA’s College Basketball Coach of the Year on six occasions (1964, 1967, 1969–70, 1972–73). He was survived by his two children, seven grandchildren, and thousands of former players, coaches and friends who took the great teacher's life lessons to heart. I never became a principal or administrator, but I have a lifetime principal and superintendent’s license in the state of Indiana as well as a teacher’s license of English. You’ve got to build up a little each day. We used the same thing we’d been using for years and it seemed to work pretty well. There wasn’t radio, to speak of. John Wooden: No. But for their own! Like one of the points in the seven point creed that my dad gave me was “Make each day your masterpiece.” Now you’re not going to make great improvement in one day. For a long time I didn’t understand that. I wanted to be a civil engineer, but I couldn’t do it. Rural America did not share in the prosperity enjoyed by large cities in the 1920s.

Either consciously or subconsciously Dad, more than anyone else, brought that about. John Wooden was born on October 14, 1910 in Hall, Indiana, USA as John Robert Wooden. After ’62 I thought maybe we have a chance.

Can you tell us about that and how you define success?

They can follow the ball. By the time their foot grows into that shoe, it’s worn out, so you get them new shoes a thumbnail too long. They took advantage, and that’s to their credit, but we let it get away. John Wooden was an All-American guard at Purdue University. He read the Bible every day and insisted that we did, and he’d read poetry to us. I didn’t like to be criticized, but at the same time, you’ve got to accept it and do what you think is right and not let outside criticism sway you. Stephen King is a 'New York Times'-bestselling novelist who made his name in the horror and fantasy genres with books like 'Carrie,' 'The Shining' and 'IT.' I discarded some. But, I don’t think I would ever do that with my touch positions, and basketball is a touch game, for the most part — from an offensive point of view, certainly. And then, the other: enthusiasm. The conditions in which we had our practices and played our games in comparison of what I’d had, they didn’t compare with what we had in high school back in Indiana. Indiana, when you were growing up, was the home of the Ku Klux Klan.

But whatever you’re doing, try to be the best you can be. Looking for something to watch? Now today, I don’t think even the written contract, many don’t think too much of even that. If you see something that doesn't look right, contact us! That’s why in some ways, I think I became a little closer with some of my players that didn’t get to play very much than I did with some of my stars. I want my players to understand we’re out there for a purpose. Height-wise, they were probably the shortest teams to ever win and, I suspect now, probably the shortest teams that ever will win. That was Dad, again. Nothing will change it.

So I think that putting him on the bench, you have that ally. I think you can do that. I love to teach English, but you get closer to those under your supervision in sports, I believe, than you do in just the classroom. But now, when this is over, don’t make a fool out of yourself. They ask my why I teach and I reply, What good is that wheel if you lose a nut that holds it on?
