Shaw wrote a number of plays concerned with wealth and its distribution, but Major Barbara may be the most complex in theme and the most successful as drama. It remains popular and has enjoyed numerous revivals, including an adaptation to film in 1941. Source: Clare Cross, for Drama for Students, Gale, 1998. In Lever's story there is a real change of attitude. Given the serious nature of the issues examined in the play—wealth and poverty, business and religion, cynicism and idealism—it is sometimes easy to overlook the fact that Major Barbara is, in fact, a comedy. Dialogue is an important aspect of Major Barbara, which has been criticized for what is sometimes seen as an excessive emphasis on verbal argument.

PRICE. RUMMY. There's a man in you somewhere, I suppose. The early 1900s saw an increasing interest in socialism (which advocates government ownership and/or control of the production and distribution of goods and services) worldwide, with Russian workers revolting against the Czar in 1905. Let me go.

LADY BRITOMART. Do you think Bismarck or Gladstone orDisraeli could have openly defied every social and moralobligation all their lives as your father has?

Now what does this Let Him Be Poor mean?
No, Mr Lomax, I am obliged to you formaking the usual excuse for my trade; but I am not ashamed of it.I am not one of those men who keep their morals and theirbusiness in watertight compartments.

Napoleon constructing agalaxy of generals and courtiers, and even of monarchs, out ofhis collection of social nobodies; Julius Caesar appointing asgovernor of Egypt the son of a freedman--one who but a short timebefore would have been legally disqualified for the post even ofa private soldier in the Roman army; Louis XI making his barberhis privy councillor: all these had in their different ways afirm hold of the scientific fact of human equality, expressed byBarbara in the Christian formula that all men are children of onefather. Other writers havegained sympathy for dramatic criminals by eliciting the alleged"soul of goodness in things evil"; but Mr Bax would propound somequite undramatic and apparently shabby violation of ourcommercial law and morality, and not merely defend it with themost disconcerting ingenuity, but actually prove it to be apositive duty that nothing but the certainty of policepersecution should prevent every right-minded man from at oncedoing on principle. It was only while I was waiting--.

Although Barbara has a strong sense of self at the beginning of the play, Shaw shows that her identity is not fixed and simple but fluid and complex. All this simply bewilders me, mother. What they do dislike and despise and areashamed of is poverty. UNDERSHAFT. My own case is aspecially hard one, because, when I implore the critics who areobsessed with the Schopenhaurian formula to remember thatplaywrights, like sculptors, study their figures from life, andnot from philosophic essays, they reply passionately that I amnot a playwright and that my stage figures do not live. You need not remind me of that, mother. A symbol is a person, object, or action that suggests something else. The word comedy can refer to a play that is light and entertaining and has a happy ending. Oh, you greatbrute-- [He instantly swings his left hand back against herface. Price prides himself on convincing the Army of his former evil. I'm no gin drinker, you old liar; but when I want to givemy girl a bloomin good idin I like to av a bit o devil in me:see?

Stoper jawr; or you'll die afore your time. She has seen the reality of what her father says and does, but she has not adopted his cynicism. At Cambridge it wasthe same. STEPHEN. The building itself, an oldwarehouse, is newly whitewashed. Ask anybody inCanning Town. Cusins rises]. to me, Sarah? No: I come here on my own.

Never mind me, my dear. Not contentwith the old scapegoat and sacrificial lamb, we deify humansaviors, and pray to miraculous virgin intercessors. BILL [defiantly] Yes, it was me that cut her lip. Asked by Wiki User. BARBARA. Which I protest I had never seen, andcould not have read with any comfort, for want of the necessaryGerman, if I had seen it.

Let him become a nucleus of disease.Let him be a standing exhibition and example of ugliness anddirt. Who's goin to give it to me? STEPHEN. Mamma! I, who have preached andpamphleteered like any Encyclopedist, have to confess that mymethods are no use, and would be no use if I were Voltaire,Rousseau, Bentham, Mill, Dickens, Carlyle, Ruskin, George,Butler, and Morris all rolled into one, with Euripides, More,Moliere, Shakespear, Beaumarchais, Swift, Goethe, Ibsen, Tolstoy,Moses and the prophets all thrown in (as indeed in some sort Iactually am, standing as I do on all their shoulders). These apparent clues to the musical nature of Major Barbara march through the production like a Salvation Army hymn, and the motif is completed at the play’s end, when, after Barbara and Cusins have agreed to make war on war, “We’re In The Money” plays softly and cynically as the house lights come up. Where are your works? Come, Dolly. They meet first on neutral ground, then in her territory, then in his, which also becomes Barbara’s by the end of the play. Britomart divorced him as a result. Barbara Undershaft has defied upper-class conventions by becoming a major in the Salvation Army, dedicating herself to the poor of London, who, naturally enough, resist her ministrations whenever they go beyond food and shelter.

Not content withexacting money from us for the maintenance of its soldiers andpolicemen, its gaolers and executioners, it forces us to take anactive personal part in its proceedings on pain of becomingourselves the victims of its violence. You cannot save Bill Walkerwithout my money." I confess there is something flattering in this simple faith inmy accomplishment as a linguist and my erudition as aphilosopher. From its mock-military title to its numerous references to actual battles, the play offers glimpses of the destructive impulse; the final scene is literally dominated by a huge cannon center stage. [Bill's last hope expires]. When you say that, I feel wickedfor loitering here. You must learn to face life seriously,Stephen. That is a frightful reflection, Mr Walker. Turco writes, “Barbara and Cusins ‘give up’ the Salvation Army by accepting the cannon factory, and Undershaft gives up his cannons by placing the power they represent at the service of the religious impulse.” Neither side has lost and “The respective ‘professions’ of Barbara and Undershaft will now develop in meaningful relation to each other instead of in isolation.” The resolution of the play is in the syntheses of Barbara and Undershaft’s convictions. BARBARA. STEPHEN. Barbara Mandrell is one of the brightest stars of contemporary country music. There are no orphans in the SalvationArmy. I've worked ten to twelvehours a day since I was thirteen, and paid my way all through;and now am I to be thrown into the gutter and my job given to ayoung man that can do it no better than me because I've blackhair that goes white at the first change? I have always made youmy companions and friends, and allowed you perfect freedom to doand say whatever you liked, so long as you liked what I couldapprove of. STEPHEN. You can go with him, too, if you like, andleave me with the servants.

JENNY [petting him] Come, come! be reinscribed within the feminine realm to rationalize or confirm their status.” She went on to say, “As Victorian culture associated the child with the feminine, a display of childish behavior affirms the gender of the daughter.” So Gainor saw Barbara’s identity reverting to an earlier association with her mother thus establishing her femininity and subservient place in society. Go and take my job atHorrockses, where I worked for ten year.
We may, some of us, have enoughnerve, enough muscle, enough luck, enough tact or skill oraddress or knowledge to carry things off better than he did; toimpose on the people who saw through him; to fascinate Katinka(who cut Potts so ruthlessly at the end of the story); but forall that, we know that Potts plays an enormous part in ourselvesand in the world, and that the social problem is not a problem ofstory-book heroes of the older pattern, but a problem of Pottses, and of how to make men of them. What a man is depends on his character;but what he does, and what we think of what he does, depends onhis circumstances. LADY BRITOMART [looking at her watch] Well, if you are determinedto have it, I insist on having it in a proper and respectableway. “I’m like you now,” she says to Peter Shirley. Who is the longest reigning WWE Champion of all time? A royal marriage hasbeen celebrated, first by sacrament in a cathedral, and then by abullfight having for its main amusement the spectacle of horsesgored and disembowelled by the bull, after which, when the bullis so exhausted as to be no longer dangerous, he is killed by acautious matador. "Poor but honest," "the respectable poor," and such phrases areas intolerable and as immoral as "drunken but amiable,""fraudulent but a good after-dinner speaker," "splendidlycriminal," or the like. Such an attitude becomes impossiblewhen the only men who can make themselves heard and rememberedthroughout the world spend all their energy in raising our gorgeagainst current law, current morality, current respectability, and legal property. UNDERSHAFT. LOMAX. If he is drunken, let him be poor.If he is not a gentleman, let him be poor. BARBARA. Sit down. Just so.
