Executive producers: Jamie Buckner, Alexandra Jensen FACEBOOK The vibe is authentically rustic, similar to Killer Joe, Winter’s Bone, or even last year’s Hold The Dark. With leads as taciturn and Shrewd as Sawyer and Lowell, many of Rust Creek’s most impressive character moments are hushed, understated affairs, which turns out to be both a strength and weakness..

Their interactions are surprisingly naturalistic, especially when the science student makes the best of a bad situation.

'Rust Creek': Film Review. Watch as the camera zeroes in on her perfect French manicure before Sawyer has to tear her false nails off to climb a cliff — there’s plenty of attention to detail here, and of understanding.

Rust Creek is not a dialogue-driven film, especially in the action-driven first act, but Corfield’s telling micro-expressions keep us with her on every painful step of her journey.

This young woman, totally alone and trying to be polite, takes a risk even admitting how uncomfortable she is.

Writer Julie Lipson clearly knows this world, and these characters, very well. Producer: Stu Pollard It’s not long before two dudes show up offering their “help.”. Slasher fanatic Joey Keogh has been writing since she could hold a pen, and watching horror movies even longer. Costume designer: Alexis Scott Production company: Lunacy Rust Creek is a thriller that brings a new twist on a tried and tested formula.

Offered a job interview in Washington, D.C., she skips going home for Thanksgiving and hits the road.

The camera pulls back to show how vast the woodland is, and how isolated Sawyer is as a result.

We’ve seen so many fish out of water horror over the years and the deep woods killer/rapist has become such a recognizable trope that it got the meta-horror treatment with Tucker and Dale vs. Language: English

But GPS leads her astray, and while stuck many miles from the highway, she is approached by two brothers who've stumbled out of a hicksploitation flick. Hollister (Micah Hauptman) and Buck (Daniel R. Hill) offer help, but the interaction gets sticky in no time; Sawyer knows how to defend herself, but soon she's out in the woods, suffering a nasty leg wound and having injured the fellas just enough to make them want to hunt her down.

Early on, traffic reports advise her to stay off the highways due to impending holiday traffic. Whether stranded in the woods or stood right by your car, it’s easy to identify with Sawyer’s terrifying predicament.

She’s a hugely likeable screen presence, and it’s easy to imagine her headlining darker fare in future thanks to those deceptively soft features. | Cookie Settings. A movie review by James Berardinelli. Rust Creek starts off like any number of films about a beautiful young woman menaced by rednecks in the isolated backwoods of some godforsaken hellhole (Kentucky, in this case): Sawyer (Hermione Corfield) is a bright, ambitious college student who, at the beginning of the film, sets out on a road trip to Washington, DC, where she’ll interview for her dream job. Distributor: IFC Midnight Director of photography: Michelle Lawler Screenwriters: Julie Lipson, Stu Pollard The dynamic inside that trailer gives the film its shot at novelty, even if Julie Lipson and Stu Pollard's script doesn't quite make the scenario pay off.

Like many survival thrillers, Rust Creek follows a young college co-ed, Sawyer (Hermione Corfield) into a remote forest, where she gets lost on her way to an important job interview.

Though the story itself is nothing new, Corfield proves ready to move beyond playing "Record Store Girl" or "Siren 3" in big Hollywood pictures.

As the story expands to include an uppity deputy, and the sheriff he tries to convince to look for Sawyer even when the trail goes cold, Rust Creek saddles its heroine with a local meth lab operator who may or may not have her best interests at heart. Corfield's Sawyer doesn't get much backstory — just a couple of scenes hinting at her ambitions to leave Kentucky behind once she graduates from college.

Rust Creek is primarily focused on the female struggle.

While Sawyer tries to decide whether she can trust Lowell, the two bond over the fascinatingly lethal properties of the ingredients he works with; she helps him cook up a batch while getting an inkling that Lowell, too, is stuck someplace he doesn't want to be.

Rust Creek boasts some lovely cinematography (the film was shot by a female DP, too) that captures how equally harsh and beautiful the virtually untouched countryside is. Sawyer and her captor form a weird sort of bond, but it’s worth noting that neither Lipson nor director Jen McGowan ever hint at Stockholm Syndrome taking hold — their heroine is too smart for that.

Likewise, the suggestion of a town-wide conspiracy is well-handled and never overplayed. Her actual home boasts Halloween decorations all year round. Screenwriter Julie Lipson and director Jen McGowan aren’t as interested in putting their heroine through a graphic, exploitative wringer (though they indulge in the thrills of survivalism in the film’s familiar first act) as they are invested in the character drama of her survival. 3. Rust Creek, an uneven but ultimately satisfying thriller from indie director Jen McGowan, seamlessly blends horror and thriller elements across its 108-minute running time.

Hello to Jason Isaacs. Dream Home is a Brutal Blend of Slasher Film and Satire [Retrospective], The Pact 2 Has Secured Distribution and a Release Date. Rust Creek is not a dialogue-driven film, especially in the action-driven first act, but Corfield’s telling micro-expressions keep us with her on every painful step of her journey. Sawyer’s interaction with the two strange men who approach her pledging to assist with directions, although it only takes up about ten minutes of screen-time, is the strongest and most frightening sequence.

As thrilling as the first act is (especially the initial confrontation, which doesn’t go quite the way anyone expects,) the film comes alive at the second act turn, when Sawyer gets rescued and/or arguably kidnapped by a mysterious recluse named Lowell (Jay Paulson) and their prickly, unconventional dynamic lights the film with a spark of unpredictability and old-fashioned soul. Composer: H. Scott Salinas

Meanwhile, Sawyer crosses paths with Lowell (Jay Paulson), a meth cook who is either going to save her or keep her tied up in his trailer house indefinitely. Catch Rust Creek in select theaters and On Demand from January 4, 2019, Director(s): Jen McGowan From director Jen McGowan, Rust Creek follows college student Sawyer (Hermione Corfield) driving home to Kentucky from college for Thanksgiving, but makes the detour of a lifetime to apply for a job in Washington D.C. Corfield made a lot of just a few moments on screen; charismatic, strong chemistry with her scene partner (Tom Cruise, no less), and one of those faces seemingly made for lighting up a screen. English actress Hermione Corfield, whom fans will recognise for her bit parts in Star Wars as well as a leading role in the otherwise throwaway Slaughterhouse Rulez, stars as Sawyer, a college senior driving the long road from Kentucky to Washington D.C. for an important job interview. As a result, Sawyer and her massive, seemingly impenetrable, SUV venture into the backwoods parallel to the titular creek. Summary. Wintry, bare-trees photography by Michelle Lawler brings a welcome naturalism to the story; happily, McGowan doesn't try to turn the modest material into a nail-biting thriller. Corfield is terrific as the lead, committing fully to the dirt-under-her-fingernails scenario.

She naturally has some fight in her, as noted in the film’s opening moments, when Sawyer is shot running on a track, the camera focused on her lean, strong legs.
