The Chief Mate's anecdote about finding a scorpion in his inkwell holds symbolic importance. These papers were written primarily by students and provide critical analysis of Secret Sharer. This liberating moment forced Conrad to write about his personal memories for the first time since he finished another story. Obviously, the story belongs in the nature of the interests displayed and in some similarities of treatment to the same phase of writing as "Heart of Darkness,' Lord Jim and Nostromo. Note that as the Captain continues risking his command for Leggatt, their relationship takes a physical toll on him: he stealthily paces the decks, startles the steward, and must force himself to adopt the "unconscious alertness" required of all able seamen. He tells no one of his decision and, since it's late, no one is there to see what happened. The fact that the Captain so readily believes Leggatt's story about his murder of the sailor may mark him as gullible or even foolish in the eyes of some. The Captain initially refuses, but then agrees to grant Leggatt his wish. He knows that his crew doesn't really trust his judgment, since he's pretty new to this stuff and no one on the boat knows him.

Captain Archbold is the Sephora's captain. "It was like the raising of a lot of dead - dead to me, because most of them live out there and even read my books and wonder who the devil has been around taking notes.

His use of what is commonly called the doppelganger theme serves to highlight the qualities that the Captain lacks by showing them embodied in his double. They shall have some more of the stories they like. Enrolling in a course lets you earn progress by passing quizzes and exams. His works, therefore, often deal with a lonely person who is cut off from his fellow man, as the captain is in "The Secret Sharer." In Joseph Conrad's ''The Secret Sharer,'' we meet a new and uncertain captain who decides to hide a fugitive crewman named Leggatt from another ship. Part 2 also marks the Captain's growing bravery, which is contrasted with the Skipper's cowardice. He feels like a stranger to his new command, the ship, and his crew. As the Skipper descends the ladder to return to his ship, he begins to ask the Captain if he suspects Leggatt to be secretly stowing away on board, but the Captain quickly dismisses him with, "Certainly not. We find out that he doesn't know his crew well, and he regularly refers to himself as a ''stranger'' aboard the vessel. He instructs his crew to look for land wind. The "sleeping suits" seem to be nothing more than official pajamas. Anyway, this new captain is sort of having a pep talk with himself because he doubts his abilities: ''In this breathless pause at the threshold of a long passage we seemed to be measuring our fitness for a long and arduous enterprise, the appointed task of both our existences to be carried out, far from all human eyes, with only sky and sea for spectators and for judges.'' The ship is a familiar symbol for a journey, and as the story starts, the Captain is alone on deck at night waiting for the wind to kick up so the ship can be set to sail, and, in essence, so his new journey can begin. The Skipper is, however, suspicious of the Captain and remarks that while the mainland is seven miles away, the Captain's ship is only two miles away from the Sephora. Leggatt is, at first, someone the Captain can speak to, and he offers to help him almost as a means of continuing their "secret" relationship. So as you can imagine, he feels kind of lonely being out at sea with no friends. They are so close to land at this point that some of the crew tell the captain that the ship is ashore.

As the Captain stands on the deck, alone, he soaks in the sunset and silence of the sea. "Secret Sharer Summary". From this knowledge or from these relationships there is no escape; in the nature of the case that no solution of the problems is possible. Though he was held aboard the Sephora as a prisoner, Leggatt tells the captain that he did not intentionally kill the man, but that the man was reckless in the midst of the storm. "The Secret Sharer" is a short story by Joseph Conrad, first published as a two-part serial in Harper's Magazine in 1910. The captain is astonished to find that a naked swimmer is floating at the end of the ladder. Leggatt's actions, he said, were necessary to protect the ship and the crew. The Sephora's Skipper represents one possible outcome of the Captain's fate, as does Leggatt. He then returns to his cabin and tells Leggatt to escape out of the quarter-deck ports while the rest of the crew is occupied. Finally, Conrad begins employing color symbolism here: the scorpion drowns in an inkwell, rendering it black when discovered by the Chief Mate, while Leggatt's hair is black, thus strengthening the connection between these two outcasts. The Captain now feels in perfect command of the ship and his crew. How Do I Use Study.com's Assign Lesson Feature?
