This dark western sets the path of Eastwood's career as a director and one can see why is he one of the best directors alive. When they challenge him, he kills all three with little effort. Due to his solid career in Westerns, Eastwood knows the genre's characteristics and pushes them forward to create something more, a movie beyond its genre.

Eastwood's character is not exactly the hero we know, but a morally ambiguous cruel man that doesn't hesitate to use and abuse the townspeople and that clearly has an agenda of his own. "Dirty" Harry Callahan, on suspension for angering his superiors (again), is assigned to the case. It's a gritty look at what the west was most probably like, with the unkempt, lawless and depraved, existing along side upright,and those claiming to be upright citizens. - A couple hints here and there leave the viewer guessing but for me, the final hint is the last line in the movie. I can't say enough good things about this film.
