What intrigued me about Jacob’s narrative was her own cultural heritage and perspectives as a woman writer. Reviews tend to be short and light on plot details. The book contains criticism of the hypocrisy inherent in a narrow-minded interpretation of Judaism. This review is available to non-members for a limited time. Sarah thirsts for knowledge about Judaism and at night, Jacob teaches her Jewish beliefs and practices. As a coloured South African, I appreciate this book more than I can say.

The story of Mende Nazer is a modern day horror story; not one of an era we had thought (and hoped) was gone for good. there is a graphic account of genital circumcision that made me cringe. It depicts the strength and dignity of the Nuba tribe. Then one night, everything changes. what made this book so powerful is that she describes not only the pain of being a slave, but also her life with her family prior to the attack on her village where she is stolen. i recommend this book so that eyes will be opened to the fact that modern day slavery does still exist. There is still so much to overcome in order to truly free women and girls, in a lot of countries. We’d love your help.

Well worth the read. Before beginning my reading of The Slave Book I returned to an earlier debate over the awarding of a writing scholarship to the late Andre Brink. Slave tells the true story of Mende, who was captured in a raid on her Nuba village and sold into slavery in Sudan. It is a great pity that I began my reading of Rayda Jacobs with The Slave Book, only learning afterwards that it is part of a trilogy. This is an engrossing and well-researched story of two people whose love transcends traditions, cultures and faiths, a story of people in bondage and their struggle to outwit, or at least survive, those who believe they possess them.
