gasoline composition

Also, note the trend of one value compared to another. Gasoline is a unique product, with one specific use: fuel for internal combustion engines such as those used in automobiles. A typical scheme might employ silica gel or a similar polar adsorbent in a 10–20 mm diameter column. Much of the refining process is designed around maximizing the production of gasoline. It has been hypothesized that a metabolite of gasoline binds to α2u-globulin in male rat kidneys to form a complex and the inability of lysosomes to catabolize these complexes results in their accumulation, which on lysis release lysosomal enzymes leading to cytotoxicity and cell death (Swenberg et al., 1989). In contrast to the gasoline engine, which has spark plugs that provide an electric spark to ignite the gasoline-air mixture, the diesel engine does not have spark plugs.

Compare the aliphatic content to the one shown in Figure 9-20b. Note the variations in the different values within the same class of compounds and between classes.

Hydrocracking is a slightly different process that adds hydrogen to unsaturated hydrocarbons as it cracks them. The composition of gasoline can vary widely depending on the blending specifications required for different regions based on climate and environmental regulations.

If an ignition source is brought within the vapors and can raise the vapor cloud or even an infinitesimally small area of the cloud to its ignition temperature, ignition occurs. Studies in rats and monkeys showed inconsistent adverse respiratory effects with intermediate exposure to gasoline (Kuna and Ulrich, 1984). Gasoline is marketed as several products, and, within each product line, in various grades. The use of increased compression ratios to gain more power from an engine had one problem associated with it. Aliphatic compounds in gasoline vary by lot, location, and manufacturing process. S. Cairney, P. Maruff, in Consciousness and Cognition, 2007. In rats a 12-week inhalation study with gasoline resulted in the development of pulmonary lesions consistent with fibrosing alveolitis (Lykke et al., 1979). Unleaded gasoline contains at least 15 hazardous chemicals including, by volume, benzene (∼5%), toluene (35%), naphthalene (∼1%), trimethylbenzene (∼7%), and MTBE (∼18%, in some states). This is because they are dependent upon several parameters, such as the method of measurement, oxygen concentration, rate and duration of heating, or time delay.

There are two standard test engines that are used for determining octane rating. Since lead-based compounds can no longer be added to most gasolines, the octane number of gasoline is increased primarily by augmenting the relative proportion of aromatic compounds and isoparaffins.

A data mining from the American Association of Poison Control Centers Toxic Exposure Surveillance System database revealed 6119 ocular exposures to gasoline and related hydrocarbons over a recent 5-year period.

The less volatile nature of the matrix can complicate the concentration step, but otherwise the general approach is similar to that for gasoline additives. The product, called alkylate, is mostly a mix of trimethylpentanes and dimethylhexanes.

There is no conclusive data on the elimination of gasoline following oral, dermal, or inhalation exposure.

In either case one will most likely want to remove the bulk of the gasoline, generally by evaporation. © 2020 American Chemical Society

Some examples of these are shown in Table 2.
Historically, gasoline has been used as an effective treatment for lice. In the 1920s, it was discovered that straight-chain alkanes cause more knocking than branched alkanes, and tetraethyllead and other compounds were introduced to help reduce knocking. EIPs of a neat gasoline, which show the different classes of compounds. Metabolism of gasoline is not well understood, but it is assumed that gasoline components induce mixed function oxidase activities in humans and rats (Harman et al., 1981). FIGURE 9-22b. We use cookies to help provide and enhance our service and tailor content and ads. Gasoline splashes in the eye are ubiquitous. A lack of aliphatic compounds would indicate an aromatic solvent rather than gasoline. ScienceDirect ® is a registered trademark of Elsevier B.V. A high-performance additive package can confer a competitive advantage upon a particular marketer; therefore, composition of these materials is often a closely kept secret. actual composition of gasolines varies widely, depending on the crude oils used, the refinery processes available, the overall balance of product demand, and the product specifications. Tetraethyllead was phased out in the U.S. by 1986, in part because the environmental toxicity of lead was a concern but also because the lead fouled catalytic converters. There also are some nondistillable residues.

Gasoline in the U.S. is usually blended from straight run gasoline, reformate, alkylate, and some butane.

A gasoline composition which comprises a major amount of a substantially colourless gasoline having a Research Octane No. There were no major changes to the fundamental design of the four-stroke engine; rather, much of the additional power came from additional cylinders, and increased compression ratios. Gasoline contains essentially all classes of hydrocarbons in the C4 to C12 range, but is dominated by aromatic compounds, with the alkylbenzenes being the most abundant and with a lesser abundance of naphthalene-based and indane-based compounds.
